Botox treatment of the masticatory muscle for bruxism and CMD

Teeth grinding (bruxism) and craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) are widespread functional disorders in the jaw area. They are often caused by excessive activity of the masticatory muscles, especially the masseter muscle. The consequences are often jaw joint pain, facial tension and significantly worn tooth surfaces, which can lead to tooth damage in the long term.

The targeted application of botulinum toxin (also known as “Botox”) in the masseter muscle represents a modern and effective extension of traditional treatment methods – such as bite splints and manual physiotherapy. The precise injection reduces muscle activity without restricting chewing movements or facial expressions. This enables noticeable relaxation of the muscles, pain relief and a significant reduction in night-time teeth grinding.

The treatment is carried out by certified dentists – such as Dr. Marlon Torsten – and usually only takes a few minutes. The therapeutic effect occurs after a few days and usually lasts for three to six months. If necessary, the treatment can be repeated regularly.

Botox treatment: Your questions, our answers

What is botulinum toxin and how does it work in the masseter?
Botulinum toxin (Botox) specifically blocks the transmission of stimuli from the nerve to the muscle. In the masseter, it leads
to muscle relaxation and reduces unconscious teeth clenching or grinding – a common
cause of CMD complaints.
How does the treatment work?
After a brief preliminary consultation, the masseter muscle is localized on both sides and injected with a fine needle
. The treatment takes a few minutes, is virtually painless and does not require
anesthesia. The effect sets in after around 7-14 days and lasts for around 4-6 months.
What are the risks?
Typical side effects are slight redness or swelling at the injection site, and rarely a
temporary feeling of weakness when chewing. Overall, the treatment is considered to be very safe.
What are the effects of treatment?
Most patients report the following:
– Less night-time teeth grinding or clenching
– Relief for the jaw and masticatory muscles
– Reduction in jaw pain and tension headaches
