Professional dental cleaning

The umbrella term of prophylaxis generally covers a variety of measures and treatments which serve to ensure healthy teeth. With regards to dental appointments, however, the term “prophylaxis” is generally used as a synonym for so-called professional dental cleaning (PZR).

How useful is professional dental cleaning?

Regular cleaning with a toothbrush, dental floss and mouthwash does not remove all residue. For this reason, professional dental cleaning should be carried out once a year in order to remove tartar and plaque without leaving residue. This is the only way to sustainably prevent caries and gum disease.

Process of professional dental cleaning

The process of professional dental cleaning can vary and is always oriented towards the patient’s individual situation. The instruments used also vary depending on the requirements.

The goal of the cleaning is to remove both soft and hard deposits from the gaps between the teeth and the smooth surfaces and subsequently to polish the surfaces worked on. With a powder jet device (Airflow^®), discolorations are removed if necessary. In addition, fluoridation is carried out in order to protect your teeth from caries in the long-term.

Lastly, we will give you individual recommendations, tips and advice for your daily dental hygiene at home. In total, the “PZR” takes approximately 1 hour.

Depending on your situation, the prophylaxis includes:

• Periodontitis treatment – pre-treatment and follow-up
• Prophylaxis for children and teenagers, including fissure sealing
• Nutritional advice
• Advice, analysis and treatment for bad breath (halitosis)
• Removal of discoloration (Airflow^®)
• Tongue cleaning
